In the past when I bought things from Apple it was an unalloyed pleasure. Oh boy! They make such great stuff. This time it felt like a Faustian bargain. They make such great stuff, but they’re such assholes. Do I really want to support this company?”

- Paul Graham - Apple’s Mistake. This is a big part of the reason I’ve not (yet) bought an iPhone. It’s easily the best device of it’s kind on the market. It’s an awesome mobile computing platform and media player. It’s got the app-store with some of the best applications you’ll find on any mobile platform.

But the app store it’s the only place I can get applications (I can choose to go elsewhere, but only by voiding my warranty). Apple must approve each and every one of the apps for the iPhone. The approval process is generally regarded as frustrating, slow, inconsistent, difficult and is driving some of the platform’s best developers away.

But I still want one despite all that, because it’s such an awesome device.

- PlayStation Insider (via gemal). That’d be a very welcome enhancement. The current browser isn’t the most stable thing in the world.

I’ve purchased the record for the artist, not the label. This download is pretty much the label’s only opportunity to address me. It’s a simple app, a really short process between a paid customer and the record label. That requires only very simple input and output. The functionality doesn’t take much, and as such there is lots of room for design, polish and engagement.

These download interactions provide a label the chance to do all sorts of positive self-promotion without getting in the way of the customer getting their download. Instead, Dropcard is packed with stupid gimmicks (like inline playback), makes the process more laborious than it needs to be, communicates rudely on behalf of the label and then ships me crappy media.
